Alan Crosbie
Leading businessman and accomplished yachtsman Alan Crosbie is the Patron of the Irish Disabled Sailing Association (IDSA). Alan succeeds the late Denis Doyle, who was a guiding light to the IDSA for many years.

A graduate of Clongowes Wood and Harvard University, Alan Crosbie launched himself into the family business, Thomas Crosbie Holdings, in 1972, quickly climbed to its peak, and took the reins from his father George in 2001.

Alan is the former Chairman of Examiner Publications (Cork) Ltd. He is also an ex-Chairman of the National Newspapers of Ireland and was President of the European Newspaper Publishers association, which represents all newspapers in the EU, Norway & Switzerland, from 1996 - 1998.

Married with five children, Alan is the fifth generation of the Crosbie family to manage the company. In 2000, he published a book on family business entitled "Don't Leave It To The Children".

A keen yachtsman, he was National Dragon Champion in 1992. It was at the right hand of his father, at the age of seven that Alan sampled his first taste of sailing: a sensation that he savoured from the beginning. "My father brought me out on his dragon when I was young. I suppose it was strange not to learn on a dinghy, but I enjoyed it from the start. Most of my family were sailors, so it was inevitable that I'd become attached to the sea," he says.

Alan stopped sailing in the late 90s to focus on his work as a Race Officer and was the man responsible for setting the course for the in-port racing as part of the Volvo Ocean Race Galway Stopover in June 2009.

It is a great boost for the IDSA to have the support and guidance of someone of the calibre of Alan Crosbie. His high profile successes in both business and sailing allow us access to a level of expertise not readily available to many other voluntary organisations.
